JGC Corporation, in partnership with Hyundai Engineering & Construction Co., Ltd., has been selected as the engineering, procurement, and construction contractor candidate for a major low carbon LNG plant under the Papua LNG Project in Papua New Guinea. The project is being developed by the Papua LNG venture led by TotalEnergies, alongside partners ExxonMobil, Santos Limited, and ENEOS Holdings.

The proposed LNG facility will be located near Port Moresby and is designed with a production capacity of approximately 4 million tonnes per annum, structured across three liquefaction trains. The plant will process natural gas sourced from the Elk Antelope fields, marking a significant step forward in expanding the country’s LNG export capabilities.

The selection of the JGC Hyundai joint venture reflects strong confidence in their global track record in LNG project execution, engineering expertise, safety performance, and competitive project delivery approach. The final EPC contract award remains subject to the project’s final investment decision, which is expected in 2026.

JGC brings prior experience in Papua New Guinea, having executed EPC work for the PNG LNG Project, the country’s first LNG development which began production in 2014 and has consistently exceeded its nameplate capacity. The addition of the Papua LNG project is expected to push the nation’s total LNG production capacity beyond 10 million tonnes annually, strengthening its position in the global LNG market.

A key highlight of the project is the integration of electric drive technology, replacing conventional gas turbines with electric motors to power refrigerant compressors. This approach is expected to significantly reduce operational carbon emissions, aligning the project with global decarbonization goals and the growing demand for lower carbon energy solutions.

Amid the ongoing energy transition, LNG continues to play a critical role as a relatively lower carbon fuel. With extensive experience contributing to over 30 percent of global LNG production capacity, JGC continues to expand its footprint through major projects across regions including the UAE, Mozambique, and Malaysia, reinforcing its position as a leading global EPC contractor in the LNG sector.
