Saudi-based Mutlaq Al-Ghowairi Contracting Company (MGC) has officially signed the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contract for the Jubail–Buraidah Independent Water Transmission Pipeline Project. The development marks a key milestone in Saudi Arabia’s ongoing efforts to strengthen and modernise its water infrastructure, ensuring long-term water security across multiple regions.

The pipeline will connect the Eastern Province city of Jubail with Buraidah in the Al-Qassim region, enabling the delivery of up to 650,000 cubic metres of drinking water per day. Spanning an impressive 587 kilometres in length, the project is one of the Kingdom’s largest strategic water infrastructure initiatives.

Designed to support both immediate and long-term water supply demands, the pipeline is part of the Ministry of Environment, Water, and Agriculture’s broader national strategy to integrate and stabilise Saudi’s regional water networks.

One of the unique technical features of the project is its ability to operate in reverse flow. The pipeline will allow water to be transferred in either direction — from Al-Shamasiyah through Al-Qulayib to Al-Jubail — using the pipeline’s full design capacity.

This flexibility is crucial for maintaining supply during peak demand or emergencies, enhancing the reliability of the national water grid.

In addition to the pipeline infrastructure, the project also includes the construction of nine major storage tanks. Six of these tanks will be located in Al-Shamasiyah, and three in Al-Jubail, offering a total storage capacity of approximately 1.63 million cubic metres.

This strategic storage infrastructure will help manage fluctuations in supply and demand, ensuring a consistent and dependable water distribution system for both regions.

The EPC contract follows the signing of project agreements earlier in March 2025 between the Saudi Water Partnership Company (SWPC) and a consortium comprising Aljomaih Energy & Water Company, Nesma Company Ltd., and Buhur for Investment Company.

The total value of the project stands at SAR 8.5 billion, highlighting the scale and strategic importance of this national infrastructure endeavour.

The Jubail–Buraidah Independent Water Transmission Pipeline is a cornerstone project within Saudi’s wider efforts to enhance water sustainability and infrastructure efficiency. It aligns with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 goals by contributing to environmental stewardship, economic diversification, and the advancement of critical public services.

With MGC now taking the reins on the EPC phase, the project is set to move forward rapidly, offering a significant upgrade to Saudi Arabia’s water transport capacity and securing drinking water supplies for generations to come.
