Qatarenergy selects ExxonMobil as the fourth partner in the North Field East Expansion Project

QatarEnergy announced that it has selected ExxonMobil as a partner in the North Field East (NFE) expansion project, the single largest project in the history of the LNG industry.

A special ceremony was held at QatarEnergy’s headquarters in Doha to mark the occasion, during which His Excellency Mr. Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, the Minister of State for Energy Affairs, the President and CEO of QatarEnergy, and Mr. Darren Woods, the Chairman and CEO of ExxonMobil, signed the partnership agreement in the presence of senior executives from both sides.

The agreement stipulates a new joint venture company (JV), in which QatarEnergy will hold a 75% interest while ExxonMobil will hold the remaining 25% interest. The new JV will own 25% of the entire NFE project, which includes 4 mega LNG trains with a combined LNG capacity of 32 MTPA.

In his remarks during the ceremony, His Excellency Minister Al-Kaabi said: “Today, we are signing a partnership agreement with ExxonMobil, our strategic and long-term partner, with whom we have enjoyed successful and fruitful relations in Qatar and across the globe. This is primarily due to the mutual trust and confidence between both parties, and to the State of Qatar’s safe and stable investment climate.”

H.E. Minister Al-Kaabi added: “We look forward to working closely with ExxonMobil to implement this world-scale project, and to live up to our commitment to power lives with cleaner energy in every corner of the world for a better tomorrow for all.” 

H.E. Minister Al-Kaabi concluded his remarks by saying: “I would like to thank His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani for His wise leadership and for his unwavering support to Qatar’s energy sector.” 


On his part, Mr. Darren Woods said in comments at the ceremony: “ExxonMobil’s scale, unique capabilities, and expertise will contribute to enhancing the North Field’s LNG production capacity, helping to meet the world’s growing demand for energy while supporting a lower-emissions future.”

“This is an important milestone in our longstanding relationship with the State of Qatar and QatarEnergy, which continue to advance their global LNG leadership,” Mr. Woods concluded.

The $28.75 billion NFE project will expand Qatar’s LNG export capacity from the current 77 million tons per annum (MTPA) to 110 MTPA. It is expected to start production in 2026, and employs the highest health, safety, and environmental standards, including carbon capture and sequestration, to reduce the project’s overall carbon footprint to the lowest levels possible.

Qatarenergy Announces the Award of Early Site Works Contract for Ras Laffan Petrochemicals Project

QatarEnergy and Chevron Phillips Chemical Company (CPChem) have announced awarding the early site works contract for the Ras Laffan Petrochemical Project (RLPP), marking the commencement of execution of the RLPP.

Consolidated Contractors Company (CCC) has been selected as the contractor to undertake this work and was awarded a lump-sum contract to prepare the site for the new facility within Ras Laffan Industrial City. Work will commence in June, at the conclusion of which the EPC contract for the project is expected to be awarded.Commenting on the occasion, His Excellency Mr. Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, the Minister of State for Energy Affairs, the President and CEO of QatarEnergy said: “The award of this contract marks the start of the execution phase of RLPP, which is a major building block in QatarEnergy’s efforts to further expand and diversify its business portfolio and implement world-class downstream project. This project will increase Qatar’s polyethylene output capacity by approximately 64%.”

First announced in 2019, the project is a joint venture between QatarEnergy and Chevron Phillips Chemical. The RLPP will feature a 2,080 kilo tons per annum (KTA) Ethane Cracking Unit making it the largest ethane cracker in the Middle East and one of the largest in the world. The facility will also include two High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) units, which will significantly raise Qatar’s current Polyethylene production capacity.

The project has completed Front End Engineering and Design (FEED) in 2021, and is currently in the EPC tendering phase. When tendering is complete and a final investment decision has been made, the project will advance to the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction phase. The RLPP is expected to commence production in 2026.

QatarEnergy exercises contract options for North Field Expansion Project EPC-3 Contract with Técnicas Reunidas

QatarEnergy has exercised the North Field South Options for the North Field Expansion Project EPC-3 contract to expand the existing liquid product storage and loading facilities required for two future additional LNG trains that are planned for the North Field South project. 

The North Field Expansion Project EPC-3 contract, which was awarded on 19 August 2021 to Técnicas Reunidas, provides for the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) to expand the existing infrastructure for increased liquid production from four new LNG trains announced in February 2021 for the North Field East project with scheduled start-up of the first LNG train by year-end 2025. 

The exercise of the North Field South options includes the expansion of existing liquid storage and loading facilities for light naphtha and field condensate, propane and butane and the expansion of existing storage facilities for Mono-ethylene glycol, within Ras Laffan Industrial City. The planned duration of the project is now 47 months, and the contract value exceeds 800 million dollars.  

This contract is the culmination of front-end engineering and design (FEED) work that began in early 2018. When completed, the North Field East (NFE) Project will increase the State of Qatar’s liquefied natural gas (LNG) production capacity from 77 million tons per annum (Mtpa) to 110 Mtpa.  The second phase of the planned LNG expansion for the North Field South (NFS) Project, will further increase Qatar’s LNG production capacity from 110 Mtpa to 126 Mtpa. The NFE Project and NFS Project are both part of the North Field Expansion (NFXP) Project.

QatarEnergy awards EPCI contract for North Field Expansion Project offshore facilities and pipelines

QatarEnergy announced the awarding of a major Engineering, Procurement, Construction, and Installation (EPCI) Contract for the offshore scope of its North Field Expansion Project to McDermott Middle East Inc.

The expansion project will increase the State of Qatar’s liquefied natural gas (LNG) production capacity from 77 million tons per annum (MTPA) to 126 MTPA, through the North Field East (NFE) and North Field South (NFS) expansion projects, with first LNG expected in 2025.

The scope for the awarded contract includes 13 normally unmanned wellhead platforms topsides (eight for NFE and five for NFS), in addition to various connecting pipelines and the shore approaches for the NFE pipelines, beach valve stations and buildings. The jackets and the pipelines for the NFS Project will be subject to a separate tender which is expected to be awarded in the first half of 2022.

Commenting on the occasion, His Excellency Mr. Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, the Minister of State for Energy Affairs, the President & CEO of QatarEnergy said: “The award of this major EPCI contract is a momentous milestone that demonstrates QatarEnergy’s commitment to delivering our LNG expansion projects on time and to ensure the significant additional global LNG demand is catered for in a timely manner. This contract also reinforces our excellent relationship with McDermott. We are confident that the effective collaboration between QatarEnergy, Qatargas and McDermott will result in the safe and successful delivery of the project according to plan.”

His Excellency Minister Al-Kaabi added: “I would like to take this opportunity to express my thanks and appreciation to Sheikh Khalid bin Khalifa Al Thani, the CEO of Qatargas, and to both the Qatargas and QatarEnergy teams for their significant efforts and contributions that resulted in the successful and timely execution of this contract.”

Qatargas, which has a proven history of delivering such major projects, has been entrusted with executing this mega project on behalf of QatarEnergy.

QatarEnergy places LNG ship orders with Korean shipyards for its expansion projects

QatarEnergy placed the first batch of LNG shipbuilding orders with Korean shipyards consisting of four vessels from Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) and two vessels from Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI), as part of QatarEnergy’s historic shipbuilding program to meet its future LNG carrier requirements.

The orders came in the form of QatarEnergy’s declaration of its ship construction options with the two Korean shipyards under its Reservation of Shipyard Capacity agreements signed in May 2020.

Commenting on this new shipbuilding order, His Excellency Mr. Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, the Minister of State for Energy Affairs, the President and CEO of QatarEnergy, said: “We are pleased to take this further step with DSME and SHI, which have built 23 Q-Flex and 14 Q-Max LNG vessels for Qatar as part of our previous LNG expansion project.”

His Excellency Minister Al-Kaabi added: “These orders, and those that will follow in the near future, constitute a significant part of our program to expand Qatar’s LNG fleet to meet the requirements of our LNG expansion projects, our existing fleet replacement, as well as our LNG trading arm.”

In concluding his remarks, His Excellency the Minister said: “I would like to take this opportunity to thank the management and working teams from DSME, SHI, QatarEnergy and Qatargas, whose dedicated efforts were instrumental in the realization of this milestone.”

The North Field expansion projects will increase Qatar’s LNG production capacity from 77 million tons per annum to 126 million tons per annum by 2027. QatarEnergy’s LNG carrier fleet program is the largest of its kind in the LNG industry and is designed to meet the shipping requirements of QatarEnergy’s LNG expansion projects, as well as replacing part of Qatar’s existing LNG fleet.

QatarEnergy and H2Korea sign hydrogen energy cooperation agreement

QatarEnergy and Korea’s Hydrogen Convergence Alliance (H2Korea) signed an agreement for cooperation in the field of hydrogen energy.

The agreement provides a framework of cooperation in the development of the hydrogen sector in both countries, encouraging growth of the hydrogen industry and expansion of the hydrogen supply chain, in addition to supporting efforts within multilateral fora to accelerate cooperation for hydrogen related technologies worldwide.

His Excellency Mr. Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, the Minister of State for Energy Affairs, the President and CEO of QatarEnergy, and His Excellency Mr. Sung-Wook Moon, the Minister for Trade, Industry and Energy in the Republic of Korea witnessed the signing of the agreement, during their meeting in Doha.

In his remarks on the signing of this agreement, His Excellency Minister Al-Kaabi hailed the solid ties and historical long-term partnership between Qatar and Korea in the field of energy and expressed the mutual desire of the two countries to further build and expand on this partnership for many decades to come.

Minister Al-Kaabi said: “We are pleased to sign this agreement on hydrogen to expand our strong relations into new horizons of cleaner energy including our long-established strategic partnership in the field of liquefied natural gas. We believe hydrogen has an important role to play in the energy transition towards an affordable, reliable and clean energy system, but only if relevant competent entities, such as QatarEnergy and H2Korea, join hands to achieve this goal.”

The Hydrogen Convergence Alliance (H2Korea) is a public-private consultative body established by the Korean government in 2017 to promote and develop the hydrogen industry with the aim of achieving an early hydrogen economy society in the Republic of Korea and to act as a bridge between the public and the private sector by exploring policy tasks, supporting businesses, international cooperation projects, and public relations projects.
