Worley has been awarded project management services for Aramco’s unconventional gas projects

Worley has been awarded two project management service contracts for Aramco’s unconventional gas program in North and South Arabia and Jafurah.

Under the contracts, it will provide front-end engineering design (FEED), detailed design support, project management services and construction management services.

The term of both contracts is three years with an option for an extension for a further two years. It will carry out the work from their Al-Khobar and Houston offices.

Técnicas Reunidas secures an engineering contract for a power station with carbon capture in the UK

SSE Thermal (SSE), a division of SSE plc, and Equinor have awarded a contract for the development of its new low-carbon power station located in Peterhead, Scotland. The contract has been awarded to a consortium of Worley, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Engineering, Mitsubishi Power and Técnicas Reunidas (“the Consortium”).

The project will involve the commercial application of state-of-the-art natural gas-fired power generation technology integrated with carbon capture, removing up to 1.5 million tonnes of CO2 emissions every year. In addition to generating up to 910 MWe of electricity, the plant will provide the necessary back-up to cover the intermittency of renewable energies and thus maximize their penetration. The captured carbon will be stored in wells in the North Sea.

The new power station will be the first of its kind in Scotland and will connect to the Scottish Cluster’s CO2 transport and storage infrastructure, which supports the UK’s target of net-zero emissions by 2050.

Técnicas Reunidas, which has been selected as “FEED Contractor”, will be part of a business consortium called MWT, also formed by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Eng., Mitsubishi Power and Worley.

The facility will contribute to meeting the UK’s decarbonization targets by neutralizing emissions from a combined cycle powered by natural gas, an essential fuel in the energy transition process. It is also one of the most important projects designed to promote the sustainable development of Scotland industrial clusters TR specialized engineers will participate in its development, working from the advanced center for engineering and technology in the energy industry that Técnicas Reunidas has in Madrid.

Additionally, TR experience in the UK market will be of paramount importance to the project and our teams in UK will contribute to the UK´s sustainability targets while boosting Aberdeen and Scottish local and UK national economies.

Worley has been awarded a contract to provide EPCM services to Sedibelo Platinum Mines Limited (SPM)

The project, in South Africa’s western limb of the Bushveld Complex, will take SPM’s Pilanesberg Platinum Mines from an open-pit operation to an underground mine. This project will extend the life of mine by 30 years from 2030 to 2060, with first ore expected from the underground operation by 2025.

“The natural progression for an open-pit mine in an orebody that extends at depth is to transition to underground mining,” explains Gladwin Mfolo, Business Sector Lead Resources, Qatar, Kuwait, and Sub Saharan Africa. “Drawing on our underground mining expertise in South Africa, Australia, and South America, we help mine owners around the world explore the feasibility of underground life-of-mine extensions and identify the most efficient and safe underground mining methods.”

Global experience and local support

In 2019, we completed the preliminary engineering design work for the feasibility study of this project. In the new contract, we will provide detailed engineering, design, and construction management services for the full scope.

This includes the development of a box cut, which allows access to a triple decline that will extract 160 ktpm of ore from the underground operation. We will also create a series of raised bored ventilation holes, and set up production sections, ore and ventilation passes, underground engineering setup, conveyors, workshops, and some surface infrastructure.

Our Johannesburg office will lead this project with support from our global integrated delivery team. The project is expected to take around 10 years to complete, with the current scope covering the first three years.

Worley has been awarded a services contract for the first two carbon capture units at Drax’s power station in North Yorkshire, UK.

The two carbon capture units are expected to capture around eight million tonnes of carbon dioxide a year, strengthening Drax’s purpose to enable a zero carbon, lower cost energy future. The carbon capture units will be integrated into two of the four existing biomass power generating units, which have a total capacity of 2,580 MW.

The carbon capture units will incorporate Drax’s negative-emissions technology, known as Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS). BECCS combines renewable electricity generated from biomass and carbon capture storage to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere permanently. BECCS has been successfully piloted by Drax.

Under the contract, we’ll provide front-end engineering and design (FEED) services for the project. The services will be executed by our team in the UK.

Upon final investment decision and selection by the UK’s Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) for the project to progress, we expect to negotiate the subsequent detailed engineering and build phases of the project with Drax.

This services contract follows the pre-FEED phase of the project, which we recently completed.

Worley has been awarded a contract to provide engineering and construction management services to Chevron Australia Pty Ltd (Chevron) for its Jansz-lo Compression (J-IC) project

The project will use subsea compression technology to maintain long-term gas supply from the Jansz-lo field, located around 200 km offshore the north-western coast of Australia. The field will supply three existing LNG trains and domestic gas plant on Barrow Island.

The J-IC project will involve the construction and installation of a 27,000‑tonne normally unattended floating field control station, around 6,500 tonnes of subsea compression infrastructure, and a 135 km submarine power cable linked to Barrow Island.

We completed the pre-FEED and FEED for the project in 2020. We’ll now provide detailed engineering, design and construction management services for the power transmission and communication components scope.

We’ll lead the project from our Perth office, with support from our global integrated delivery team. The project is expected to take approximately five years to complete.

Worley has been awarded a services contract by Oxy Low Carbon Ventures (OLCV), a subsidiary of Occidental, for a facility in British Columbia

It’s being designed to produce renewable fuels by capturing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere using Carbon Engineering’s Direct Air Capture and AIR TO FUELS™ technologies.

The facility is expected to produce up to 100 million liters of ultra-low carbon fuel annually. It’s being developed by OLCV and Squamish Huron Clean Energy Corporation and is expected to be the first commercial-scale project of its kind.

When built, the low-carbon fuels are expected to provide a new option for hard-to-decarbonize industries such as marine, air, rail and truck transportation. This will give transporters the option to reduce their fleets’ carbon dioxide footprint without modifying their vehicles.

We’re providing early front-end engineering and design (pre-FEED) services for the facility and will act as project integrator for the technology. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2023 with the facility anticipated to be operational by 2026. Upon completion of the pre-FEED, the project is expected to move into the FEED and then the engineering, procurement, fabrication, and construction phase.

We’re also developing the FEED for a DAC facility, DAC-1, being developed by OLCV’s 1PointFive in the US Permian Basin. It’s expected to capture 1 million metric tons of atmospheric carbon dioxide for permanent storage when completed.

Worley awarded a services contract for a residue upgrade project at Aramco’s Ras Tanura refinery

The project will convert low-value refinery residue into higher-value products including gasoline, jet fuel and ultra-low sulphur diesel.

Under the contract, we will provide early front-end engineering design (pre‑FEED), front-end engineering design (FEED) and project management services for the entire project. These services cover upgrades to the atmospheric and vacuum gas oil from the crude distillation unit, and an upgrade to the atmospheric gas oil from the Kuff condensate unit.

Advisian, our consulting business, led the front-end conceptual studies evaluating multiple process configurations. This included the development of cost estimates for possible options, integration of technology licensors, and optimization of existing brownfield assets.

Worley has been awarded an engineering services contract by Shell Canada Products for a large-scale carbon capture and storage (CCS) project

Worley is providing preliminary front-end engineering and design services for Shell Canada’s proposed Polaris CCS project. The project would capture carbon dioxide (CO2) from the refinery and chemicals plant located at Shell’s Scotford Complex near Edmonton, Canada.

The Polaris CCS facility is expected to start up around 2025, subject to a final investment decision by Shell expected in 2023.

Worley lands FEED contract for Total’s 20,000 psi North Platte field development

Worley has been awarded the Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) contract for TOTAL E&P USA’s North Platte field development in the Gulf of Mexico.

Located approximately 275 kilometers off the coast of Louisiana, the North Platte field development includes a semi-submersible floating production unit (FPU) in water over 1,300 meters deep.

The project brings together Worley’s recently acquired capability for the floating production unit topside design with Intecsea experience for the design of the hull, mooring and subsea pipelines. Now under one roof, Worley’s expanded capability to deliver flexible floating production unit designs with capital efficiency and minimal time to market proved a key contributor to this award.

Having completed the pre-FEED phase in August 2019, this award extends Worley’s involvement in Total’s deepwater Gulf of Mexico project.

The North Platte Development forms part of Total’s reentry, as an operator, into Gulf of Mexico operations with oil production expected to average 75,000 bpd at plateau level.

TOTAL expects to make its final investment decision in 2021.
