Bilfinger has been awarded a major contract by EWE for the development of its 320 MW green hydrogen production plant in Emden, Germany, marking another significant step in the country’s hydrogen economy ambitions. Under the scope, Bilfinger will handle steelwork, piping systems, component assembly, and commissioning activities for the project, which forms part of the wider “Clean Hydrogen Coastline” initiative.

The Emden facility is expected to become one of the largest green hydrogen plants in Europe and is scheduled to begin supplying green hydrogen to industrial customers from late 2027. The project is set to strengthen Lower Saxony’s position as a major industrial and clean energy hub while supporting the region’s transition toward climate-neutral energy solutions.

The contract represents the final major package for the project after previous awards covering electrolysis systems, compressors, and civil construction works. With key engineering and construction scopes now awarded, EWE is moving closer toward securing long-term green hydrogen supply agreements with industrial partners.

EWE stated that defining the project’s core cost and planning parameters provides the foundation for commercially viable hydrogen supply contracts, with discussions already ongoing with multiple industrial customers. The company also emphasized the importance of stable regulatory frameworks and supportive European policies to accelerate the large-scale adoption of hydrogen technologies.

Bilfinger will oversee detailed engineering and installation of balance-of-plant systems surrounding the electrolysis process, including several kilometers of piping infrastructure, steel structures, and auxiliary technical systems. The company highlighted that the partnership reflects the growing momentum behind Europe’s hydrogen infrastructure expansion and the push toward sustainable industrial energy solutions.
