Larsen & Toubro’s Energy Hydrocarbon Onshore division has been awarded a large engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract by Bharat Coal Gasification and Chemicals Ltd (BCGCL) to develop a coal-to-ammonium nitrate complex in Odisha.

BCGCL, a joint venture between Coal India Limited and Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited, has classified the order under L&T’s “large” project segment, typically valued between ₹2,500 crore and ₹5,000 crore.

The project will be executed on a lump-sum turnkey basis, with L&T taking full responsibility for engineering, procurement, construction, commissioning, and delivery. The scope includes setting up a nitric acid and ammonium nitrate plant with a production capacity of 2,000 tonnes per day.

Once completed, the facility will convert coal into ammonium nitrate, a critical input for sectors such as mining, infrastructure, and industrial applications.

This development supports India’s broader push toward coal gasification, with a national target of reaching 100 million tonnes capacity by 2030. The initiative is aimed at reducing reliance on imports by utilizing domestic coal to produce value-added products like fertilisers, methanol, and synthetic natural gas. L&T highlighted that strengthening indigenous gasification capabilities will be key to advancing the country’s energy transition while ensuring high standards in engineering, safety, and project execution.
