McDermott has been awarded a decommissioning definition engineering contract by QatarEnergy for the State of Qatar’s first offshore decommissioning initiative.

Under the scope of the contract, McDermott will develop a comprehensive technical and commercial framework and undertake detailed techno-economic studies to enable the safe and systematic retirement and removal of 27 aging offshore platforms. The scope also includes all associated subsea infrastructure, such as cables and pipelines, located in the Al-Karkara, Idd El-Shargi and Maydan Mahzam fields. Drawing on its extensive knowledge of these assets and global experience in offshore decommissioning, McDermott will deliver a solution focused on safety, efficiency and environmental stewardship.

“As the first decommissioning project of its kind in the country, and considering the scale of assets involved, this award marks a significant milestone and an exciting new chapter for McDermott, QatarEnergy and the State of Qatar,” said Mike Sutherland, McDermott Senior Vice President, Offshore Middle East. “We are uniquely positioned to deliver a landmark framework that will establish new industry benchmarks and set best-in-class standards for future decommissioning programs in the region and beyond.”

“McDermott has installed the majority of Qatar’s offshore assets,” added Neil Gunnion, Qatar Country Head and Vice President, Operations. “We are proud to leverage decades of experience to continue delivering innovative, lifecycle-driven energy solutions through our long-standing and trusted partnership with QatarEnergy.”

McDermott’s engineering capabilities, combined with its deep expertise across the engineering, procurement, construction and installation phases, will ensure a seamless transition from definition engineering to project execution. By embedding safety at every stage and developing environmentally responsible removal strategies tailored to complex offshore conditions, McDermott aims to minimize risk while supporting sustainable project delivery.

Definition engineering activities will commence immediately and will be led from McDermott’s Doha office.
