QatarEnergy has awarded an engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract to Samsung C&T Corporation for a landmark carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) project that will support its existing LNG production facilities in Ras Laffan Industrial City.
The project aims to capture and store up to 4.1 million tons of CO₂ annually, positioning it among the world’s largest CCS initiatives. This milestone further strengthens Qatar’s role as a global leader in large-scale carbon capture deployment and underscores its commitment to sustainable and responsible energy production.
His Excellency Mr. Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, Minister of State for Energy Affairs and President & CEO of QatarEnergy, described the award as a key step forward, stating:
“This milestone project enhances our carbon capture and sequestration portfolio, reinforcing our position as a reliable supplier of affordable, lower-carbon energy. All our LNG expansion projects will incorporate CCS technologies, with the goal of capturing more than 11 MTPA of CO₂ by 2035.”
He further added:
“Through the implementation of critical environmental components of QatarEnergy’s sustainability strategy, our CCS initiatives will drive significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions and strongly contribute to Qatar’s National Climate Change Action Plan. We are pleased to partner with Samsung C&T Corporation and look forward to the successful delivery of this world-class project.”
QatarEnergy commissioned its first CCS facility in 2019 with a capture capacity of 2.2 MTPA. Two additional CCS projects are currently under development to support the North Field East and North Field South expansions, targeting an additional 2.1 MTPA and 1.2 MTPA of CO₂ capture respectively.
