ACCIONA will operate four wastewater treatment plants in Egypt over the next two years for 7 million euros

ACCIONA will operate and maintain four wastewater plants in different sites in Egypt over the next two years following an agreement signed on 10 October between the company and the Egyptian authorities. The contract is for approximately 7 million euros.

ACCIONA will undertake the rehabilitation of these facilities, located at Abnoub-El Fath (80.000 m3/d), Sodfa-El Ghanayem (30.000 m3/d), El Ayat (30.000 m3/d) and Abu Simbel (6.000 m3/d), all built in 2007. It will also carry out their supply and start-up, as well as the operation and maintenance of the four plants, under the terms of an agreement signed with the National Organization for Potable Water and Sanitary Drainage (NOPWASD).

The treated wastewater will exceed 140,000 m3/day when the four plants are at full capacity. It will be used mainly for agricultural irrigation, increasing the level of water reuse in the country. With these projects, ACCIONA advances in the objectives of its Sustainability Master Plan, in this case, in the efficient use of water from the Nile.

ACCIONA awarded road extension project in Australia

A consortium led by ACCIONA, together with local companies, has been awarded the contract to extend Stephenson Avenue, one of the main arteries in the City of Stirling; around 10 km north of Perth’s central business district (the capital of Western Australia) along the Mitchell Freeway.

The AU$191 million (€121 million) project, called the “Stephenson Avenue Extension”, will provide a new connection from the freeway to other major arteries, the industrial area of Osborne Park and the Westfield Innaloo Shopping Centre, as well as creating 800 jobs.

It is part of a wider plan to transform the Stirling City Centre, providing a new strategic link and opening up large tracts of currently vacant land suitable for development. It also complements recently completed projects in the area designed to improve connectivity such as the Mitchell Freeway southbound widening works from Cedric Street to Vincent Street and Northbound Mitchell Freeway widening from Hutton Street to Cedric Street.

These are the first BOOT/EPC (Build, Own, Operate and Transfer / Engineering, Procurement and Construction) contracts that ACCIONA has signed in the area of wastewater treatment in the Middle East.

The Madinah-3 wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) will be located in Medina, the fourth most populated city in Saudi Arabia with more than 1.1 million inhabitants, and will have a capacity of 200,000 m3/day (expandable to 375,000 m3/day) to treat urban wastewater. ACCIONA will be responsible for the facility’s development, design, financing, construction, operation and maintenance for 25 years.

The group will also build 23 kilometers of recycled water collectors for irrigation, three storage tanks and the respective pumping stations.

ACCIONA partners with Korea Zinc to build MacIntyre Wind Farm in Australia

ACCIONA and international metals group Korea Zinc Co. have reached an agreement to jointly develop the MacIntyre Wind Farm in Queensland (923MW), one of the largest renewable energy projects in Australia, and the largest energy project in ACCIONA’s portfolio.

Under the agreement Ark Energy, a subsidiary of Korea Zinc Co., will take a 30% stake in MacIntyre Wind Farm, with ACCIONA retaining 70%. ACCIONA will remain responsible for managing the project through its development, construction, operations and maintenance stages.

ACCIONA has secured a long-term Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with CleanCo, Queensland’s newest public electricity company, which will acquire the annual production from 400MW of ACCIONA’s facilities for ten years. MacIntyre Wind Farm will also power Sun Metals Corporation, a Korea Zinc Co. subsidiary in Australia, helping the metals group meet its target of obtaining 100% of its energy from renewables by 2040.

José Manuel Entrecanales, ACCIONA Chairman and CEO, said: “Having Korean Zinc as a partner in this landmark project is a privilege and marks a milestone in MacIntyre’s development. Our companies share a common goal to pioneer clean energy and this partnership is the perfect example of how two companies from different sectors can work together to deliver flagship renewables infrastructure”.

Yun B. Choi, Korea Zinc Co. CEO, said: “We are very pleased to have established a long-term relationship to carry out this exciting project, unique in its size, which represents a major step forward for our respective businesses. Our participation in the MacIntyre project reflects our commitment to renewable energy in Australia”.

In addition to the MacIntyre Wind Farm, ACCIONA will build the Karara Wind Farm (103MW), owned by CleanCo. The wind farms are adjacent to each other. Together, MacIntyre and Karara complex will generate clean electricity to supply nearly 700,000 homes and avoid the emission of around 3 million tonnes of CO2 each year.

STRONG INVESTMENT

The two projects will jointly mobilise investments of around AU$2 billion (€1.3 billion) and will be key to the State of Queensland’s goal of achieving a 50% share of renewable energy in its electricity consumption by 2030. Construction of the wind farm complex is scheduled to begin in the second half of this year.

The two projects will generate up to 400 jobs during throughout their useful lives and provide an important economic boost to the local community, with local investment exceeding AU$500 million (€325 million).

The wind farms will install 180 Nordex Delta 4000 turbines of 5,7MW, the latest generation of turbines by the German manufacturer.

Construction is slated to start in the second half of this year, with the lion’s share of investment in 2022 and 2023. The wind farm complex will start operating in stages to ensure connection to the grid with full technical guarantees for the state electricity system. The complex will be fully operational by 2024.

Saline Water Conversion Corporation (SWCC) awarded ACCIONA and its partner RTCC to build $500m desalination plant in Saudi Arabia

The Saudi publicly-owned company Saline Water Conversion Corporation (SWCC) has awarded ACCIONA and its partner RTCC the construction of the Al Khobar 2 desalination plant at Khobar, on the east coast of Saudi Arabia around 400 kilometres from Riyadh. It is a turnkey contract valued at around $500 million (€460 million).

It will be one of the largest in the country, with a capacity of 600,000 m³ per day to serve a population of three million

The facility will be equipped with reverse osmosis technology and a daily capacity of more than 600,000 m³, making it one of the biggest in the country and the largest RO plant under EPC scheme awarded in a single shot in KSA. It will provide a service to three million people in the area. ACCIONA thus consolidates its presence in the water treatment sector in Saudi Arabia, a country in which it currently has three projects under way.

Last year, a €750-million contract was awarded for the financing, design, construction, operation and maintenance (for 25 years) of the Shuqaiq3 desalination plant. Located in the south-west of the country on the Red Sea coast, it is expected to be completed sometime in 2021 and will have a  treatment capacity of 450,000 m³ per day to provide a service to a population equivalent of two million. It will also be equipped with a photovoltaic plant to reduce internal energy consumption.

In July 2018, a contract was also awarded for around €200 million to build and commission the Al Khobar 1 desalination plant (capacity: 210,000 m³/day). It is located close to the Al Khobar 2 plant and serves a population of 1,000,000.

The company has also designed and built the Al Jubail RO4 seawater desalination plant in the east of the country for the utility Marafiq. With a capacity of 100,000 m³ per day, it serves both the city and the nearby industrial complex.
