Fluor Wins Three Construction Project Industry Awards

Fluor Corporation announced that three of its Advanced Technologies & Life Sciences projects were recognized with 2021 awards of excellence by the Construction Users Roundtable (CURT) at its annual awards gala in Cape Coral, Florida.

“We are honored to receive these prestigious awards,” said Juan Hernández, president of Fluor’s Advanced Technologies & Life Sciences business. “These projects exemplify the value Fluor offers clients with a knowledge-based solutions model focused on safety, teamwork, integrity and excellence.”

Fluor was recognized with a Construction Industry Project Excellence (CIPE) award, a Construction Industry Safety Excellence (CISE) award and a Construction Industry Workforce Development (CIWD) award.

Project Excellence Award for Hyperscale Data Center Project
Fluor was awarded the CIPE award for its Hyperscale Data Center project in Finland. CIPE awards recognize project teams for outstanding delivery of capital projects. The award judging committee evaluated the ability to add value, eliminate waste and increase overall excellence in five areas: safety, cost performance, schedule performance, quality and innovation. Fluor won in the international $500-million to $1-billion projects category.

Safety Excellence Award for ASR Domino Sugar Refinery Rebuild
Fluor was awarded the CISE award for its rebuilding of two sugar silos at the 111-year-old ASR Domino Sugar refinery located in Chalmette, Louisiana, after they were almost destroyed by fire in August 2020. Fluor deployed the day after the fire and provided immediate site cleanup, extensive repairs and restoration of the fire-damaged silos and associated machine rooms. The rebuild included assembly of engineered circular scaffolding systems to address logistics around each 80’ high silo located on the top of a 60’ tall building roof and the removal of 1.8 million pounds of sugar that was stored in each silo prior to the fire. Fluor won in the Heavy Construction Contractors 200,000 to 500,000 work hours per-year category.

Workforce Training Award for N.C. Pharmaceutical Facility
Fluor’s third award, the CIWD award, was for workforce training related to a pharmaceutical facility in North Carolina. Training was undertaken to address safety, quality, technical skills, soft skills and leadership. Training was critical to project execution as nearly 14,000 workers on the project delivered approximately 11 million on-site work hours.

Fluor-led JV Awarded Contract to Install Grinding Mill at Grasberg Copper and Gold Mining District in Indonesia

Fluor Corporation announced that its joint venture with Petrosea – Fluor Petrosea Joint Organization (FPJO) – has been selected by PT Freeport Indonesia to install a new grinding mill at its Grasberg copper and gold mining district in Papua, Indonesia. Fluor booked its undisclosed portion of the contract in the third quarter of 2021.

FPJO will construct a third semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mill adjacent to the existing milling facilities as the mining district continues to ramp up underground production primarily from the Deep Mill Level Zone and Grasberg Block Cave mines following completion of mining in the open pit in 2019. With the additional SAG mill, the milling capacity will be approximately 240,000 tonnes per day.

“Fluor has built several expansions at Grasberg as well as other major projects in Indonesia since the 1980s,” said Tony Morgan, president of Fluor’s Mining & Metals business. “We value the trust we have earned over the decades with the Freeport team and are proud to expand our global footprint in the industry as a solutions provider for the global copper demand.”

The Grasberg project is located in the remote highlands of the Sudirman Mountain Range on the western half of the island of New Guinea.

Fluor’s Perth, Australia office will lead the project with support from Fluor’s offices in Jakarta and Vancouver.

Construction is scheduled to begin later this year and be completed in 2023.

Fluor Selected for Sea Port Next Generation Multiple-Award Contract

Fluor Corporation announced that the U.S. Navy’s Naval Sea Systems Command selected the company for a 7½-year position on the SeaPort Next Generation (SeaPort NxG) indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity multiple-award contract.

SeaPort NxG provides for engineering and program management services that span the entire spectrum of mission areas and technical capabilities supported by the Department of the Navy. As a company selected for a position on SeaPort NxG, Fluor is now eligible to compete for task orders across 23 functional areas including engineering, financial management and program management. The government estimates services procured through the task orders will total approximately $5 billion annually.

“This award further positions Fluor in the professional and technical solutions space and allows the company to provide a wide range of innovative and value-added services for the Department of the Navy,” said Tom D’Agostino, group president of Fluor’s Mission Solutions business. “Fluor has a long history of supporting various Navy commands and the company looks forward to continuing its work through this contract.”

Fluor wins contract for AGIC’s propane complex in Saudi’s Jubail

Fluor Corporation announced that it was named project management consultant for Advanced Global Investment Company’s (AGIC) new propane dehydrogenation, polypropylene and utilities and offsites complex in Jubail Industrial City, Saudi Arabia. Fluor will perform project management consultant services for the front-end engineering design, detailed engineering, procurement and construction phases of the project. Fluor booked its portion of the undisclosed contract value in the first quarter of 2020.

Once complete, the complex will manufacture 843,000 tons-per-year of propylene and 800,000 tons-per-year of polypropylene that will be used for the production of specialty polymers for the face masks, automotive, pipes, food packaging and textiles industries.

Fluor Awarded Engineering, Procurement and Construction Contract for World-Scale Adiponitrile Plant

Fluor Corporation announced that it was recently awarded a contract to provide engineering, procurement and construction for a new 400 kilo-ton-per-annum adiponitrile (ADN) plant in Shanghai, China. The new ADN plant is part of INVISTA’s ongoing work at the Shanghai Chemical Industry Park where the company recently completed a 215 kilo-ton-per-annum hexamethylenediamine (HMD) plant and a 150 kilo-ton-per-annum nylon 6,6 polymer plant. Fluor booked the undisclosed contract value in the fourth quarter of 2019.

“Fluor has been providing engineering, procurement and construction solutions to clients in China for more than 40 years,” said Mark Fields, group president of Fluor’s Energy & Chemicals business. “With this award, our proud legacy in China continues and we look forward to supporting INVISTA’s efforts to expeditiously increase production of ADN with their company’s most-advanced technology to meet growing demand within China and globally.”

When complete, INVISTA’s new ADN plant will integrate with its existing HMD and polymer facilities to directly supply domestic customers with the key building blocks to produce nylon 6,6 and other high-value products in China. These products are used in the production of a variety of goods, including those in the automotive, industrial, apparel and consumer electronics industries.

Fluor to Provide Project Management Consultancy Services for BPCL’s Polyols Petrochemicals Project in India

Fluor Corporation announced that it was awarded a project management consultancy services contract by Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) for its Polyols Petrochemicals Project at its existing integrated refinery and petrochemicals complex in Kochi, Kerala, India. Fluor’s scope of work includes front-end engineering and design of both the inside and outside battery limits as well as detailed design, engineering, procurement and construction management services for the facility’s utilities and offsites. Fluor booked its portion of the undisclosed contract value in the fourth quarter of 2019.

Six new process units will be built as part of this project and integrated into the existing refinery. New process units will include propylene oxide, propylene glycol, polyols, ethylene oxide/monoethylene glycol, ethylene recovery unit and a cumene unit.

When complete, the Kochi complex will produce propylene glycol, ethylene glycol and various grades of polyols based on 250 kilotonnes per annum of polymer grade propylene. Polyols are used for a variety of applications in the automobile, textile and furniture industries. They are also widely used in construction as insulation and sealants.

“BPCL is making major advancements at its Kochi Refinery to produce niche petrochemicals that are extensively imported into India to manufacture polyurethanes used in footwear, foam and other items,” said Mr. Murali Madhavan, executive director of BPCL’s Kochi Refinery. “We are happy that Fluor, an internationally reputed engineering and consultancy organization, has been selected as the project management consultant for the project.
