TotalEnergies joins Masdar and Siemens Energy in initiative to drive green hydrogen development and produce sustainable aviation fuel’

Masdar, one of the world’s leading renewable energy companies, announced that TotalEnergies is adding its expertise in the energy sector to a Masdar-led initiative focused on green hydrogen to produce sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). 

Senior executives from Masdar, Siemens Energy and TotalEnergies signed a collaboration agreement on the sidelines of Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW) 2022, to act as co-developers for a demonstrator plant project, which will be established at Masdar City, Abu Dhabi’s flagship sustainable urban development. The agreement was signed by Francois Good, Senior Vice President, Refining and Petrochemicals Africa Middle East and Asia at TotalEnergies, Dietmar Siersdorfer, Managing Director Middle East and UAE, Siemens Energy, and Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi, Chief Executive Officer of Masdar.

Masdar announced ahead of ADSW 2021 last year that it was collaborating with Abu Dhabi Department of Energy, Etihad Airways, Lufthansa Group, Khalifa University of Science and Technology, Siemens Energy, and Marubeni Corporation on the demonstrator plant initiative. Having joined the initiative, the aim now is that TotalEnergies will offer its expertise in SAF production, offtake and supply the partner airlines . 

Since January 2021, the partners in the initiative have completed a range of evaluations on technology suppliers, feasibility studies and conceptual designs, while working closely with regulators on compliance issues. The aim is to proceed to the front end engineering design (FEED) stage later this year. 

By leveraging their respective areas of expertise across the energy spectrum, and their local and global market reach, the co-developers believe that the demonstrator project can pave the way to commercial production of SAF, helping to reduce production costs and making it commercially viable.

EDISON AND SNAM ALONGSIDE SAIPEM AND ALBORAN FOR THE GREEN HYDROGEN VALLEY PROJECT IN PUGLIA REGION (Italy)

Edison and Snam have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) along with Saipem and Alboran Hydrogen – who had both already signed a cooperation agreement last January – for the joint development of the Puglia Green Hydrogen Valley project,one of the first large-scale initiatives for the production and transport of green hydrogen in Italy.

The aim of this project is to help accelerate the uptake of green hydrogen – one of the key components of the EU’s decarbonisation strategy – within Italy’s energy mix to ensure national and European climate neutrality targets are met by 2050.

The Puglia Green Hydrogen Valley project plans to build three green hydrogen production plants in Brindisi, Taranto and Cerignola (Foggia) for a combined capacity of 220 MW and powered by a photovoltaic production of 380 MW in total. Once the three plants are operational, it is forecasted that they will be able to produce about 300 million cubic metres of renewable hydrogen every year.

This green hydrogen will be used primarily for local industries, including through injecting – or blending – the hydrogen into Snam’s local gas network and/or employed for sustainable mobility.

For one of these three plants, the authorisation process is already underway for the Brindisi project which will involve the construction of a production plant for green hydrogen using electrolysers with a capacity of 60 MW that will be powered by a PV farm.

The entire Puglia Green Hydrogen Valley project will enable to sustain and involve key regional players, including the Acquedotto Pugliese water supply company, the Appulo Lucane Railways, Puglia’s technological and production districts, the Polytechnic of Bari, the Universities of Bari, Foggia and Salento. Moreover, there will be investments in the research and development aimed at promoting the creation and development of competencies and a production chain dedicated to the hydrogen industry in Puglia.

The agreement represents a fundamental milestone in the establishment of a hydrogen industry in Italy by creating new opportunities in terms of employment and competencies.

With this agreement Edison confirms its role as a key player also in the sector of green hydrogen, a technology that has synergies both with the company’s core business, which covers the entire value chain in the energy sector, and with its strategic development plan.

Thanks to the most extensive network in Europe and its technological expertise, Snam is promoting its role as an enabler of the hydrogen valley ventures, by contributing to the development of projects and connecting production and consumption points.

Saipem wishes to emphasise the importance of this project in terms of its contribution to the recovery plan for Italy. The company is involved in the development of technologies and innovative business models in the green hydrogen and renewable energies sectors as part of the evolution process of its portfolio of skills. Saipem confirms its role as the ideal partner for supporting its clients in the energy transition process in order to meet net zero targets.

Finally, Alboran’s determinations regarding green hydrogen are perfectly aligned with the Italian and European strategies. The involvement of other strategic partners in this venture will make it possible to maximise the potential of the project model that has been proposed for Puglia.

In order to execute the project, the partners anticipate creatinga special purpose company (Alboran 30%, Edison 30%, Snam 30%, Saipem 10%) following the signing of binding agreements that still have to be negotiated by the parties,based on the relevant regulatory frameworks, including the ones concerning operations among related parties.

McDermott Expands Energy Transition Portfolio with Green Hydrogen Award

McDermott International, Ltd announced that its CB&I Storage Solutions business has been awarded a contract by New Jersey Natural Gas for the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) of a power-to-gas facility in Howell, New Jersey. The facility will use solar power to produce green hydrogen for injection into an existing natural gas distribution network for home and commercial use.

“Green hydrogen is critical to power a carbon-free future,” said Cesar Canals, Senior Vice President of CB&I Storage Solutions. “As the energy industry seeks opportunities to reduce its impact on the environment, our proven project execution model is positioned to deliver the next generation of sustainable energy infrastructure.”

Initial engineering activities are underway in Plainfield, Illinois; project completion is expected in 2021.

Air Products, ACWA Power and NEOM Sign Agreement for $5 Billion Production Facility in NEOM Powered by Renewable Energy for Production and Export of Green Hydrogen to Global Markets

The World’s Largest Green Hydrogen Project Will Supply 650 Tons Per Day of Carbon-Free Hydrogen for Transportation Globally and Save the World Three Million Tons Per Year of CO2,

Air Products, in conjunction with ACWA Power and NEOM, announced the signing of an agreement for a $5 billion world-scale green hydrogen-based ammonia production facility powered by renewable energy. The project, which will be equally owned by the three partners, will be sited in NEOM, a new model for sustainable living located in the north west corner of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and will produce green ammonia for export to global markets.

The joint venture project is the first partnership for NEOM with leading international and national partners in the renewable energy field and it will be a cornerstone for its strategy to become a major player in the global hydrogen market. It is based on proven, world-class technology and will include the innovative integration of over four gigawatts of renewable power from solar, wind and storage; production of 650 tons per day of hydrogen by electrolysis using thyssenkrupp technology; production of nitrogen by air separation using Air Products technology; and production of 1.2 million tons per year of green ammonia using Haldor Topsoe technology. The project is scheduled to be onstream in 2025.   

Air Products will be the exclusive off-taker of the green ammonia and intends to transport it around the world to be dissociated to produce green hydrogen for the transportation market.
