Nextchem’s MyRechemical awarded an engineering contract by Alia Servizi Ambientali for a waste to methanol and hydrogen plant in Empoli, Italy

Maire Tecnimont S.p.A. announces that its subsidiary MyRechemical, NextChem’s subsidiary dedicated to Waste-to-Chemicals technologies, has been awarded by Alia Servizi Ambientali S.p.A. a basic engineering contract for a waste to methanol and hydrogen plant to be located in Empoli (Tuscany), Italy.

The scope of work includes basic engineering design of the plant and the provision of necessary documentation to start the plant’s public authorization process with the Tuscany region. The basic engineering phase is expected to be completed by the end of 2022. 

Once authorized and completed, the plant will process 256,000 tons/yr. of non-recyclable waste and will produce 125,000 tons/yr. of methanol and 1,400 tons/yr. of hydrogen. The plant will benefit from MyRechemical’s chemical conversion technology which allows the recovery of waste that cannot be mechanically recycled, or other types of unsortable dry waste (i.e. Refuse Derived Fuel – RDF). The carbon and hydrogen contained in the waste are converted through a gasification process into a synthesis gas, which is used to produce low-carbon methanol and hydrogen. This process avoids the emission of pollutants in the atmosphere. Methanol is used as an alternative fuel for sustainable mobility or as a secondary raw material in the chemicals and manufacturing industries. Hydrogen can be used in low-carbon industrial processes to decarbonize hard-to-abate and energy intensive industries.

Nextchem awarded advanced basic engineering study by Storengy (Engie) for a new way of producing bio-methane from pyrogasification of waste wood

Maire Tecnimont S.p.A. announces that its subsidiary NextChem has been awarded a contract by Storengy to carry out an Advanced Basic Engineering Study for a waste wood and solid recovered fuel conversion plant to produce biomethane. Once the project has reached the final investment decision targeted by the end of 2022 and is granted the related permitting, NextChem, in association with another Maire Tecnimont Group’s subsidiary, shall act as an EPC contractor for the methanation package of the project, which is set to be implemented in Le Havre, France. 

Storengy, an ENGIE subsidiary, is one of the world leaders in underground natural gas storage. Drawing on 70 years of experience, Storengy designs, develops and operates storage facilities and offers its customers innovative products. Storengy wants to become the European reference in hydrogen storage and in production of renewable gases, which are of particular relevance in the current market environment to deliver a clean, secure and affordable energy transition. 

NextChem is Maire Tecnimont Group’s company for the development of technologies in the field of green chemistry and energy transition, with a portfolio including proprietary and exclusive licensed technologies and technology integration platforms focused on three areas: reduction of pollutant and GHG emissions released from existing plants, mechanical recycling and chemical recycling, as well as technologies which use biomass or biological raw materials to produce intermediates, bio-fuels and bio-plastics.

NextChem will be responsible for the engineering and cost estimating for the syngas purification, methanation unit and methane upgrading of the plant, which will produce 11,000 tons per annum of renewable and low carbon natural gas (biomethane). French company COMESSA will be responsible for the design and supply of the chemical reactor. The technology to be used in the plant has already been successfully applied to the Gaya pilot plant near Lyon, owned by ENGIE, which validated the feasibility to produce biomethane. This will be the first commercial project in the world of its kind to inject in the grid methane produced through pyrogasification of waste wood, kick-starting the so called “second generation biomethane”.

NextChem and Storengy will also establish a broader cooperation agreement with the aim that NextChem would act as strategic partner, co-developer and co-licensor of the Gaya technology currently patented and owned by ENGIE.

Maire Tecnimont awarded USD185 MN urea def project in the United States

Maire Tecnimont S.p.A. announces that its main subsidiaries Tecnimont S.p.A. and Tecnimont USA has been awarded a new urea Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) project in the United States, by the same leading global chemicals producer that recently awarded to Tecnimont a blue ammonia project in the Country. 

The contract value is approximately USD 185 MN. The urea DEF plant, which will be based on Stamicarbon’s proprietary technology (part of Maire Tecnimont Group), entails a 1,500 tons per day urea production unit plus the necessary utilities and facilities, including a CO2 purification plant. Project Completion is expected as early as 2025. Once completed, the plant will receive the ammonia from the above-mentioned Blue Ammonia plant.  

The plant will produce Diesel Exhaust Fluid (a high-purity urea aqueous solution, known as AdBlue® in Europe) which is added to diesel engines to limit the emission of nitrogen oxides during the combustion process, thus significantly reducing the environmental impact of such emissions. 

The contract’s scope of work includes supply of technology, full engineering activities and supply of all materials and equipment as well as construction supervision services. Construction activities will be the responsibility of an external party not belonging to Maire Tecnimont Group under a different contract, directly awarded by the client. Such contractual strategy is typically implemented in the United States to better optimize the construction activities and mitigate Maire Tecnimont Group’s risks. It also leverages Tecnimont USA’s expertise in managing complex projects, while valorizing local content in the Country.

Maire Tecnimont S.p.A. : New awards for an overall value of approximately USD 200 MN in the technology-driven core business

Maire Tecnimont S.p.A. announces that its main subsidiaries have been granted new awards and change orders for a total amount of approximately USD 200 million for licensing, engineering and procurement (EP) services as well as engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) activities. These contracts have been granted by prestigious international clients mainly in Europe, North Africa, the Middle East, Asia and North America.

In particular KT-Kinetics Technology, the Group’s licensor and EPC contractor, has been awarded a contract extension of an existing EPC project of gas monetization currently in execution in the Zohr Gas field (Egypt), one of the most important Mediterranean hubs for the production of natural gas. With this award the Group confirms its leading expertise in the valorization of natural gas, the only transition fuel capable of progressively industrializing energy transition.

Maire Tecnimont awarded USD230 MN Blue Ammonia project in the United States

Maire Tecnimont S.p.A. announces that its main contractor Tecnimont S.p.A. has been awarded a project on an EPCM basis by a leading global chemicals producer for the implementation of a Blue Ammonia plant in the United States as part of the Country’s plan to develop its energy transition industrial vision, through Maire Tecnimont Group’s cooperation with major players in the natural resource transformation sector.

The contract value is approximately USD230 MN USD. The plant entails a 3,000 tons per day Blue ammonia synloop plus the necessary utilities and facilities. Project Completion is expected as early as 2025.

“Blue” ammonia is produced from hydrogen derived from natural gas where the CO2 by-product is captured and sequestered to comply with the most stringent environmental requirements.

The contract’s scope of work includes full engineering activities and supply of all materials and equipment as well as construction supervision services, while Construction activities will be executed by another party under a different contract, which will be directly issued by the client.  Such contractual strategy is typically implemented in the US to better optimize the construction activities and mitigate both Maire Tecnimont Group’s and client’s risks, also leveraging Tecnimont USA’s expertise in managing construction activities and local content in the United States.

Maire Tecnimont awarded €1.1 billion EPC contract by Rosneft for the VGO Hydrocracking Complex at the Ryazan Refinery (Russian Federation)

Maire Tecnimont S.p.A. announces that its subsidiaries Tecnimont S.p.A and MT Russia LLC have signed an EPC contract with Rosneft for the implementation of the VGO Hydrocracking Complex at the Ryazan Refining Company’s (RORC) production site, 200 km South-East of Moscow. This contract follows the agreement signed by Maire Tecnimont and Rosneft and announced on 28th October 2021. 

The overall contract value is approximately €1.1 billion (Russian VAT excluded). The project is subject to financial closing as well as to the fulfilment of certain conditions, typical for this kind of transactions. Project total duration, expected to be typical for this kind of initiatives, will be defined and disclosed once such financial closing and the fulfilment of certain conditions are met. 

VGO stands for Vacuum Gas Oil, which is produced by vacuum distillation unit in a refinery plant. Rosneft’s subsidiary RORC is one of the largest Russian refineries by volume of refining and production output. 

The project’s scope of work entails a full range of works related to the design, supply of equipment and materials, construction, start-up and commissioning, and project finance services. Once completed, the VGO Hydrocracking Complex will have a capacity of 40,000 barrels per day serving the need of the local market according to the higher standard Class 5 regulation. The project will benefit from highly efficient technology and equipment with an automated control system to reduce the carbon footprint of the plant. 

A significant portion of the scope of work will be performed by MT Russia in its Moscow engineering centre, where Maire Tecnimont Group employs about 200 specialists currently involved in several ongoing Russian projects. Thanks to its well-established reputation as a provider of added value services to the Russian market, MT Russia represents therefore a strategic asset within the Group.

Nextchem (Maire Tecnimont Group) awarded engineering works by ENI for a carbon capture plant in Italy

Maire Tecnimont S.p.A. announced that its subsidiary NextChem has been awarded by ENI the engineering works for a carbon capture plant at the natural gas plant of Casalborsetti, in the province of Ravenna. The project could extend into a full EPC (Engineering Procurement and Construction) should certain conditions take place. The plant would be able to separate the CO2 from emissions from the natural gas plant’s turbo compressor, purifying and compressing them, thus allowing the capture of about 25,000 tons per year of carbon dioxide which would otherwise be released into the atmosphere.

The technology used for the capture of CO2 in emissions gasses operates at high efficiency and low power consumption even at low concentrations. It has already been widely used to capture emissions of hard-to-abate industrial sectors worldwide.  
NextChem has developed a range of solutions that recycle CO2 to produce new chemicals, in view of an increasingly circular economy based on industrial symbiosis.

Maire Tecnimont awarded three EPC contracts worth USD 3.5 billion by Borouge in Abu Dhabi, UAE

Maire Tecnimont S.p.A. announces that its subsidiary Tecnimont S.p.A. has signed with Abu Dhabi Polymers Company Ltd. (Borouge) three EPC contracts relating to the world-class fourth expansion phase (Borouge 4) of the Ruwais polyolefins complex in Ruwais, located about 240 km west of Abu Dhabi City (Abu Dhabi, UAE).

Borouge is a joint venture between the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC), one of the world’s major oil and gas companies and a leading diversified energy and petrochemicals group wholly owned by the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, and Austria based Borealis, one of the world’s leading providers of advanced and circular polyolefin solutions.

The overall value of the three contracts, awarded on the basis of a competitive bidding process, is approximately USD 3.5 billion.

The three EPC Lump Sum turnkey contracts relate to the execution of three packages of the Borouge 4 project: the “polyolefin units package”, which includes two polyethylene units with a capacity of 700,000 tons per year each, and 1-hexene (1)  unit; the “cross-linkable polyethylene (2)  unit package”; the “utilities and offsites package”, which includes the utilities and offsites units for the whole Borouge 4 project. The project’s scope of work entails complete engineering services, equipment and material supply, erection and construction activities, commissioning and start up assistance. The completion in expected by 2025. Once the project is completed, the Ruwais complex will be the world’s largest single-site polyolefin facility. 

Maire Tecnimont Group has been supporting the UAE to create value by developing its energy transformation industry since the late 90s, with the first Borouge polyolefin complex (Borouge 1) completed in 2001. After three additional expansion projects in 2007, 2010 and 2018 (Borouge 2, Borouge 3, and PP5, respectively), the Group has completed the Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) services for the Borouge 4 project in 2020. Maire Tecnimont and Rosneft agree to implement a project at the Ryazan refinery in the Russian Federation

Maire Tecnimont S.p.A. announced that it has signed an Agreement of Intent with Rosneft for the implementation of a project related to the “Construction of the VGO Hydrocracking Complex” at the Ryazan Refining Company’s (RORC) production site, approximately 200 km South East of Moscow. 

The agreement was signed on the occasion of the ХIV Eurasian Economic Forum in Verona, in Italy. 

VGO stands for Vacuum Gas Oil, which is produced by vacuum distillation unit in a refinery plant. Rosneft’s subsidiary RORC is one of the largest Russian refineries by volume of refining and production output.

The project’s scope of work entails a full range of works related to the design, supply of equipment and materials, construction, start-up and commissioning, and project finance services.

The VGO hydrocracking complex will enable RORC to increase refining margins by converting heavy petroleum products into Class 5 light commercial petroleum products (gasoline, kerosene, diesel fuel). The complex includes hydrocracking units, hydrogen production units, elemental sulphur production units, and off-site facilities. All equipment has high environmental performance characteristics. The project uses modern, highly efficient technology and equipment with an automated control system to reduce the carbon footprint of the plant.

Rosneft is implementing an unprecedented program to upgrade its refineries, with more than 900 billion rubles (13 billion USD approximately) already been invested to significantly increase production of Class 5 gasoline, diesel fuel and fully meet the needs of the domestic market.

Maire Tecnimont Group strenghtens its footprint in Poland with an EPC contract worth over €200 Million

Maire Tecnimont S.p.A. announced that its subsidiary KT – Kinetics Technology S.p.A. has been awarded an EPC Lump Sum-Turn Key (Engineering, Procurement & Construction) contract by LOTOS Oil, concerning the expansion of the Gdansk Refinery aimed at improving its crude processing capability as well as ensuring higher quality and energy-efficient fuels. 

LOTOS Oil is part of the LOTOS Group, the second largest refiner in Poland, engaged in the extraction and processing of crude oil, as well as in the wholesale and retail of refined petroleum products.

The contract is worth slightly over €200 million and relates to the execution of a hydrocracking unit (Hydrocracked Base Oil plant) with associated logistic facilities, which will allow the production of Group II base oils. Project completion with fully operational facilities is expected by the first half of 2025. This innovative plant will be the second one in Europe and will be capable of treating better performing base oil groups, with a lower environmental impact. International environmental regulations are driving the need for higher quality base oils, especially in the automotive sector, where engine oil manufacturers are responding to increasing demand for low sulphur and energy-efficient products.

Maire Tecnimont Group reaches agreement with Greenfield Nitrogen LLC for the development of a green ammonia plant in the United States

Maire Tecnimont S.p.A. announces that its subsidiaries NextChem, MET Development and Stamicarbon have reached an agreement with US-based Greenfield Nitrogen LLC, to develop the first dedicated green ammonia plant in the US Midwest. As part of the agreement, NextChem will start a feasibility study for the 240 metric tons per day green ammonia project, utilizing renewable energy as feedstock via the intermediate production of green hydrogen. MET Development will assist Greenfield Nitrogen in the development of the project. The plant will be designed utilizing the best available technologies for the green hydrogen production together with the ammonia technology that will be provided by Stamicarbon, which earlier this year launched its new STAMI Green Ammonia technology. 

The project is the first of a series of green ammonia facilities that Greenfield Nitrogen is interested to strategically develop in the US Corn Belt. The plant and storage facility, which will be located near Garner, Iowa, will be powered by local renewable sources and will supply the ammonia to the local market, which traditionally is a large ammonia-consuming market. 

The green ammonia plant will strengthen the development of the low carbon industry in the region and is expected to save over 166,000 tons of CO2 emissions per annum. The production of around 83,000 tons of ammonia per annum will reduce the region’s dependency on the ammonia currently imported from abroad.

Maire Tecnimont Group awarded €130 MN petrochemical contract by Kazanorgsintez PJSC in the Russian Federation

Maire Tecnimont S.p.A. announces that its subsidiaries Tecnimont Planung & Industrieanlagenbau GmbH and MT Russia LLC have been awarded by Kazanorgsintez PJSC (KOS) an EP contract (Engineering and Procurement) for the execution of a Low-Density Polyethylene (LDPE)/ Ethylene-Vinyl Acetate (EVA) plant, to be implemented inside the existing KOS facilities, located in Kazan, in the Republic of Tatarstan (Russian Federation).

KOS is one of the largest producers of polyethylene in the Russian Federation, supplying its products to 36 countries worldwide. The contract signing ceremony was held in Maire Tecnimont Group’s Milan headquarters and attended by KOS General Director Farid Minigulov and Maire Tecnimont Group CEO Pierroberto Folgiero, together with several top executives of both companies.  

The overall EP contract value is approximately €130 million. The contract is under a Lump Sum scheme for the Engineering and Procurement Services and under a Reimbursable scheme for the Equipment and Material supply. The scope of the project includes the implementation of a new LDPE/EVA Plant with a capacity of 100,000 tons per year. The Project will be mainly aimed at expanding the production capacity of polyolefins, and its completion is expected within about 40 months from the contract signing date. 

The portion of the scope of work in the Russian Federation will be performed by MT Russia in its Moscow engineering centre, where Maire Tecnimont Group employs about 200 specialists currently involved in several ongoing Russian projects. MT Russia represents therefore an asset within the Group’s network, with a well-established reputation as a provider of added value services to the Russian market. Tecnimont Planung & Industrieanlagenbau is Tecnimont’s German engineering subsidiary located in Braunschweig, highly specialized in the design of LDPE plants.

Maire Tecnimont strengthens its footprint in Nigeria with a contract worth about USD 1.5 billion by NNPC

Maire Tecnimont S.p.A. announces that its subsidiary Tecnimont S.p.A. has been awarded a contract by the Federal Executive Council to carry out Rehabilitation works for the Port Harcourt Refinery Company Limited, located in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, in Nigeria, which is a subsidiary of Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC). 

The overall contract’s value is about USD 1.5 billion. The project entails engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) activities for a full rehabilitation of the Port Harcourt refinery complex, aimed at restoring the complex to a minimum of 90% of its nameplate capacity. The complex is composed of two refineries totaling an overall capacity of approximately 210,000 bpd (barrels per day). The project will be delivered in phases from 24 and 32 months and the final stage will be completed in 44 months from the award date.

New Awards for an Overall Value of Approximately €100 Million in the Technology-Driven Core Busines

Maire Tecnimont S.p.A. announces that its main subsidiaries have been granted several awards for a total amount of approximately €100 million for licensing as well as engineering and procurement (EP) services. These contracts, awarded by some of the most prestigious international clients, have been granted mainly in North America, Europe, and South-East Asia.

In particular, KT – Kinetics Technology S.p.A. has been awarded an EP contract by a global engineering and construction company, consisting in the detailed engineering, procurement and delivery of three large-scale Delayed Coker Furnaces, to be installed in a new oil refinery in Mexico. The three massive coking furnaces will be delivered fully modularized and ready for site installation, and, once completed, will represent one of the world’s largest delayed coking units.

With this new achievement, KT strengthens its track record in refining and confirms its capabilities in supplying highly complex equipment, through the implementation of state-of-the-art technologies and modularization methodologies.
